Scavenger Hunt

Second Life Scavenger Hunt!

This scavenger hunt is designed to have you practice some common Second Life tasks, and also to get you started in exploring some of the variety of environments available in this world.

This hunt will introduce you to some areas for: Art, Free items, Real World locations in SL, Nature, Science Fiction/Fantasy, and Education.

These two pages give you the scavenger hunt rules and also help if you have trouble with any of the tasks:

Common Second Life Tasks

Note:  I give you a landmark for some of the locations...but not all! You must use the search function to find the others.  To use the landmarks on this page, just click them. It will bring up a new window with a SL map.  Click the teleport button on that map, then go to the SL Viewer.  A tp offer will come up there.  Use it!

1.  SEE SOME ART
Sleepy Snail
It is a giant snail...and it is sleepy.  Is it art?  I have no idea?  But it looks WAY cool!

In your notecard describe something interesting you find at this sim.

Spencer Museum of Art
Second Life presence of the Spencer Museum of Art, located in Lawrence, Kansas, USA. http://spencerart.ku.edu.  Currently hosting: a Petrovsky flux
Art is not always pretty!  P.S.  Click on stuff here, there is some cool interactivity

In your notecard, describe at least one of these interesting things that you discover when you click on something (or just something that really captured your interest while there).

Or do some searching on your own via this website:  http://secondlife.com/destinations/arts

2.  FIND SOME FREEBIES
One nice thing in SL is that there are many places for "Freebies," which are things that cost zero Lindens! Go to one of the Freebies stores below and find a new outfit for yourself. After you find some new clothes, try on at least one new item (BE CAREFUL!!) and take a group picture in the new outfit while at the store. Put that photo in your notecard. (Note:  Sometimes these freebie areas get busy!! If you can't get into one, try the other)
The Free Dove (very nice quality clothes--also hair)
--OR--
Freebies Dungeon
(lots of free things, including skins and shapes--PLEASE NOTE)--more mature than Free Dove)

ALSO NOTE:  You can find many freebies in the Second Life Marketplace: https://marketplace.secondlife.com/
Just do a search, then in the results, “sort by” price low to high. You’ll find many items there for free. To “buy” them, must log into the marketplace using your regular SL name and password and make sure to be logged into SL as well. After you buy something there it will be delivered directly to your SL account.

3.  BE A TOURIST
Some of the most famous places in real life (RL) have been recreated in SL. Who knows? You might even find your home town here! These are great for people teaching in EFL environments (you can find New York, London, and many other famous cities/places from the English-speaking world), but you can also find locations that represent many different languages. For this task:

A.    Find the Eiffel tower in France Paris (please note-there is more than one "Paris" in SL). Go to the top of the Eiffel tower and create a landmark at that spot. Put the landmark in your answers notecard.  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Paris%20Eiffel/24/106/22
 --OR--
B.  Visit La Grand Place in Brussels, where the famous UNESCO World Heritage site is meticulously reproduced in Second Life.  More info at:  http://www.brussels1000.be/
--OR--
C.  Go to Ancient Rome (Roma) and get a free toga in the entrance building. Wear the toga. Find the Coliseum Arena and take a picture of yourself inside the Coliseum. Be careful of the lion—last time I was there he looked very hungry! Put the picture in the answers notecard.

4.  NATURE and BEYOND
Second Life has some beautiful nature areas to explore.

Go to the Virtual Grand Canyon.  Enjoy the natural scenery of the Virtual Grand Canyon. This is a virtual version of the region where the Colorado River cut through kilometers of thick geological rock layers. This is a sculpted environment by Sominel Edelman (Landscapes Unlimited).  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Landscapes%20Unlimited/100/140/36    Explore a bit, and find your way down to the river via the tunnels (NO cheating and jumping to your death).  Find the  BBQ and picnic table.  There is an item there that will give you something to drink.  What choices does it give you?  Write this on your notecard.
--OR--
Find the URP (Underwater Research Pod) on EduNation III.  Suit up in your dive gear, climb down the hatch in the pod and take a group picture in front of the undersea wreck to include in your answer card. You can find a teleport to the URP at the main teleport area on EduNation III.

5. GET EDUCATED!
There are many places in Second Life devoted to education (EduNation is just one of them!).  Explore one of these areas devoted to education and/or language learning.  Go to http://secondlife.com/destinations/learning and see what you find.
On your notecard tell us something interesting you find there!

====================================
Did you do all five activities? That is all! Please make sure that you put all the information I asked for in your answers notecard, which should be called:   "Scavenger Hunt--"insert your names here." Please number your answers! When you are done, give my avatar a copy of the notecard.  Just find me on your friend’s list, double-click my name, then drag the notecard onto my picture.
